By the end of September 2008, the Federal Government’s Community Clean Up Program will have seen Asbestos Audits completed for more than 73 communities throughout the Northern Territory and the painting of some 580 homes in 12 selected communities.

Throughout this intensive project, McMahon Services has shown how an efficient and effective asbestos management and painting programme can be implemented while whilst respecting environmental and cultural issues.

Objectives

McMahon Services is nearing the end of an intense building painting and asbestos survey program in Indigenous communities throughout the Territory. McMahon Services is an Australian leader in asbestos removal and uses a comprehensive Environmental Management System on all projects to ensure a successful outcome for all.

Approach

McMahon Services is fully aware of the effect the Community Clean Up program can have on Indigenous communities. It has ensured the highest safety, quality and environmental standards have been used while respecting each community’s cultural sensitivities.

Challenges

A primary consideration for any project involving Indigenous communities is understanding and respecting cultural issues. McMahon Services has extensive experience in working with the Indigenous sector and approached this project with the same commitment and care.

Stakeholder and community engagement

McMahon Services has provided a high level of stakeholder and community engagement throughout this project. It has successfully balanced the needs and expectations of the Department of Family and Community Services and Indigenous Affairs with Indigenous Affairs with those of Indigenous Australia delivering a highly effective program.

Employment and training

McMahon Services liaised closely with the relevant Federal, Territories and local authorities to determine the extent of the repair works needed and skill level within the various communities.

The program has provided valuable employment and training opportunities for Indigenous communities with up to 150 Indigenous workers trained and employed to assist with the painting program.

This approach also helps local community members to take ownership of the program.

Outcomes

By the end of September 2008, 5,000 houses and community buildings in Indigenous communities will have completed asbestos audits, providing safer and healthier accommodation as well as significant environmental outcomes and 580 homes will have been painted by McMahon Services staff providing a tidier community for all to live.
